Welcome to Jim Thorpe, PA – An Old-World Gem in the Pocono Mountains

The Borough of Jim Thorpe sits in a small valley on the Lehigh River in the southern Pocono Mountains. Its location, spanning the river and tucked tightly into the mountainside, offers a view reminiscent of a classic European village. Some have even nicknamed the town Pennsylvania’s Little Switzerland.

Jim Thorpe (initially named Mauch Chunk) was founded as a coal company town in the early 19th century. The addition of canals, a gravity railroad and eventually a full railway system, made it a bustling hub of industrial activity. This early economic success is also prevalent today in the ornate architecture and stately buildings along Broadway.

Along with its rich history, Jim Thorpe also offers walkable streets, unique geography, quaint shops and restaurants and plenty of seasonal outdoor recreation. Of course, its popular Fall Foliage Festival and Winterfest have become two of NEPA’s most beloved seasonal events.

Slow Down Time with a Stroll On Broadway

Broadway is Jim Thorpe’s main thoroughfare, winding uphill from Hazard Square near the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway and lined with narrow sidewalks, parked cars and nonstop character.
