Chasing Northeastern PA's Vibrant Fall Foliage and Wildflower Blooms

The transition from summer to fall is one of our favorite times here in NEPA. Late-blooming summer flowers offer their final burst of color. And, of course, that fall foliage is just beginning to pop. This vibrant blend of trees and wildflowers makes autumn in Northeastern Pennsylvania a uniquely-famous, annual attraction.

By late September, the first signs of fall begin to appear. You’ll find them in wetlands and the more northern parts of our region. Maples and black gums start to turn vivid shades of red and orange. Goldenrod and asters brighten the meadows and roadsides with brilliant yellow and purple blooms. It’s a great time to hit the trails. NEPA’s northern state parks, forests and preserves offer a sneak peek of the coming foliage season.

By early October, much of our northern region is approaching peak color. Sugar maples, birches, and sassafras light up the forests with yellows, oranges, and reds. Meanwhile, perennials like beebalm and Joe-Pye-weed add rich bursts of red, orange, and soft pink tones.

In mid-October, visit Nescopeck State Park, Lehigh Gorge State Park or Hickory Run State Park for a full-spectrum display of NEPA’s peak foliage. Ferns, vines and trees along the creeks, riverbanks and trails feature shades of gold, fiery red, and deep purples. And you’ll still find quite a few wildflowers giving it one last hurrah.

By late October, the season begins to wind down. Big oaks and hickories reveal one final splash of reddish brown and golden yellow. And, in an instant, as those vibrant hues slowly fade, we’re reminded just how magical this season is in Northeastern Pennsylvania. From the first flicker of color to the final burst of reds and golds, autumn in NEPA never fails to captivate — leaving us eagerly awaiting its return next year.
