The Columns Museum | History & heritage in Milford

The Columns Museum in Milford is home to the Pike County Historical Society and one of the most unique museum experiences in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Housed in a striking 22-room neoclassical mansion built in 1904 for businessman Dennis McLaughlin, the museum itself is an artifact of history. Its pristine white exterior, grand architecture, and richly detailed interior set the stage for a journey through time, offering an impressive collection of local and national treasures.

Historic Artifacts & Exhibits

Among the museum’s most prized holdings is the Lincoln Flag, the 36-star flag used to cradle President Abraham Lincoln’s head after he was shot at Ford’s Theatre in 1865. Visitors can also explore artifacts from Jeannie Gourlay, an actress present on that fateful night, including costumes and personal effects. Other highlights include exhibits on the Lenape Indians, a vast collection of war memorabilia, and the Davis-Bailey Family Exhibit, which chronicles the story of four generations of an African American family in Milford.

The museum also features portraits and works connected to figures like Chief Thundercloud, Father Francis Craft, and philosopher Charles Saunders Peirce. From Native American history to the impact of local families and veterans, the museum provides a diverse and meaningful exploration of heritage.

A Mansion with a Story

The Columns itself is a landmark worth visiting. Built as McLaughlin’s countryside retreat, the mansion showcases intricate fireplaces, unique woodwork, and architectural details that reflect its era. Guided tours bring the home’s history to life while connecting it to the stories preserved inside.

With free admission for children, discounted rates for students, and group tours available, the Columns Museum in Milford offers both education and inspiration.
