We know that the people here in NEPA come through time and time again for those in need. So, we asked our local nonprofits and charities how our DiscoverNEPA followers can help them this holiday season and the coming year ahead.

The Carbon County Friends of Animals are always in need of help at their shelter. Give them a call or visit to see how you can make a difference through fundraising, fostering, shelter maintenance, event volunteerism, transportation of cats to and from veterinary clinics, supply pickup and more.
Friends of Tuscarora and Locust Lake State Parks has a wide variety of opportunities to put your skills to work for our state parks. Whether you’re a trail maintainer, a wildlife expert, a clerical professional, a handy person or an event organizer, your help is needed to improve and advance our state parks and forests. Volunteer days for 2023 will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month from March – October from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
If you prefer to dig in and get your hands dirty, this opportunity is for you. Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Dalton is looking for barn beautification volunteers to assist with tasks that directly benefit their rescued farm animals, including sweeping the barns and mucking stalls.
Combine your love for hiking and nature preservation at Lacawac Sanctuary Environmental Education Center. They need volunteers on an ongoing basis to help sustain and take care of the nine miles of trails at Lake Lacawac.
Are you passionate about helping animals and providing a service to our veterans? Rescue Pets Serving Vets takes in dogs from high kill shelters and places them in loving homes. They prioritize giving to veterans that need a special companion as a service or emotional support animal. The nonprofit organization is always in need of fosters and volunteers to help clean kennels, feed and walk dogs or offer basic training.
Artists for Art Gallery is seeking new volunteers in the art gallery to serve as ambassadors to the public and their creative base of members. Their biggest need for help is during gallery hours, Thursday – Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., for full or half shifts. Perfect for retirees, student volunteers seeking hours on weekends, and/or anyone who loves the arts.
The Berwick Historical Society is accepting new volunteers to give tours of the Jackson Mansion and the David A. Sadock House Museum. Help is also needed in the gift shop and watering and caring for the gardens at various society properties.
The Hazleton Art League is a community space that hosts art classes and promotes art education and cultural events. As such, they can use your help caring for the facility weekly with the upkeep and cleaning of the art gallery, studios, classrooms and restrooms.
Are you good with technology? Making Music Matter For Kids Inc. is seeking virtual and live-stream event volunteers. Your talents are needed with video studio recording, video editing, podcasting, live-stream and in-studio productions, high-end audio and multi-camera video production for live performances, podcasting/vlogging, instructional teaching, and corporate meetings/events.
The Orwigsburg Historical Society & Museum is dedicated to preserving the history, architecture, and culture of the Borough of Orwigsburg and Southern Schuylkill County. Volunteer opportunities exist in the areas of genealogical and local history research, office and clerical work, record-keeping, light cleaning, community outreach, organizing and summer gardening.
The Rossetti Foundation for the Arts and Culture in Scranton is seeking volunteers to help plan and participate in various events and fundraising. The tasks include arts and crafts assignments, assisting with workshops, assisting with serving for caterers, landscaping, painting and more.
The Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association are looking for volunteers to help with ongoing tasks and special events. The Friends of the Library volunteer group meets monthly on Wednesday afternoon at the Montrose Library to discuss the many upcoming needs for volunteer assistance.
If you’ve got a green thumb and love getting your hands in the dirt the Wilkes-Barre Preservation Society has a volunteer opportunity that’s perfect for you. In the summer of 2023 they will need weekly helpers to assist with gardening and groundskeeping at the Zebulon Butler House Museum.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania is looking for volunteers to mentor a child once per week over a year-long commitment. Children are between the ages of 6 to 16 and can remain matched until they turn 18 or graduate high school. If interested, the organization is also looking for board members or committee members to sit on regional boards to help raise awareness and funds.
Court appointed adult volunteers are needed to work with CASA of Lackawanna County to support and advocate for children in the foster care system. You can apply now. Training sessions begin in March, 2023. Additionally, they are looking for helpers in the CASA office and with fundraising events.
The Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania is looking for help in their campaign against child abuse and neglect. The organization is seeking an administrative volunteer, maintenance volunteer, prevention and education assistant, and a special events volunteer.
The Good American Hose Company is one of five volunteer fire stations that serves Mahanoy City and Mahanoy Township. They are always in need of new firefighters as well as helpers to plan and execute their fundraising efforts.
Grace-St. Paul’s Kidz Zone is a faith-based children’s ministry which offers before and after-school care sessions for families living in the Jim Thorpe Area School District. They are in need of volunteers to work with children as mentors and tutors between 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and/or 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Monroe County Meals on Wheels is looking for delivery drivers to deliver meals to the homebound along a pre-planned route between the hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They also have volunteer opportunities in administration, events and more.
The NEPA Youth Shelter is seeking volunteers to assist with their after school teen drop-in center that serves 14-19 year old high school students in the Scranton area. Hours of operation are currently 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and responsibilities include: intake form completion with new youth, monitoring the sign in/sign out table, preparing snacks and dinner (as needed) for youth, assisting the youth in taking donations from the shelter, light cleaning of the facility, monitoring youth utilizing the drop-in center for compliance with safety policies and rules, assisting with homework help as able, and serving as a positive adult role model.
Pike County Hands of Hope provides emergency shelter and referral services to homeless or near-homeless persons throughout Pike County. They are seeking board members with a background and skills in social media, media relations, inter-organizational relations, financial management, fund-raising, policy development, and/or operational management.
Telespond Senior Services is looking for paid volunteers to serve in their Foster Grandparent Program. Foster grandparents work one-on-one with children identified as high-risk or having special needs, supporting their physical, mental, emotional and social development.
The McGlynn Center in Wilkes-Barre is looking for mentors to assist/tutor children and youth living in low income housing developments with reading and homework assignments after school. Mentors are asked to commit to at least one day a week, from about 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP of Berks, Pike & Wayne Counties seeks volunteers who are 55 or older to help at local senior centers, Adult Day Center, food pantries, Pike County Hands of Hope, PA Medi, Ombudsman, American Red Cross, Ladore Camp, Retreat & Conference Center, Salvation Army and other organizations.
